    Position Description

    The Generation Engineering department in ESB Engineering and Major Projects is the centre of engineering for ESB's generation businesses and provides consultancy services in generation technology for external and international clients.

    We currently have an opportunity for a Chemistry Specialist to join our Generation Engineering team. Our staff work on domestic and international power projects. The successful candidate will support Engineering and Major Projects in the delivery of power plant projects within both new build and existing projects with the initial focus on the Moneypoint Power Station

    The Chemistry Specialist will be responsible for undertaking various chemistry related duties in Engineering and Major Projects. The successful candidate should be a team player with good problem-solving skills. They will also be required to work autonomously, be flexible and be a self-starter with the ability to provide support to other teams and projects as required.Excellent communication skills are required and the ability to support and work effectively with staff at all levels within and outside of the organisation is essential.This is an opportunity for ambitious, high performing person to work in a dynamic, rewarding and achievement focussed environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Responsible for all plant chemistry related issues.
  • Ensure the effective control of power station chemistry to maintain high availability, efficiency, reliability, and maintainability
  • Ensure that chemical safety is given the highest level of priority, such that the public, personnel, and plant are protected
  • Provide strategic Chemistry direction, as required for our stations.
  • Provide advice on good practice in a range of engineering /chemistry work and commission engineering/chemistry work as required in particularly in abatement plant.
  • Setting appropriate Chemical safety standards, determining procedures and auditing chemical performance.
  • Maintain awareness of generating plant condition and chemistry related issues.

  • Ash Technology
  • Emissions Abatement Technology
  • Ensure that process chemistry is given high priority and awareness on site, by constantly reviewing chemistry issues with the Operations team
  • Ensure the maintenance and operation of permanent equipment specific to the chemical section.
  • Review chemical monitoring which will include all the recommended continuous on-line and daily laboratory analysis, process analysis etc.
  • Managing and co-ordinating all relevant Chemistry process activities along with necessary procurement, contract management, safety management and project management activities
  • Develop and issue appropriate specifications and manage budgets in relation to Chemistry area.
  • Evaluate and review specifications in relation to fuel and other input materials and ensure quality.
  • Ensure that Chemistry targets are set and monitored and operate a program of continuous Chemistry improvement.
  • Proactive involvement in station Safety initiatives and activities.
  • Other duties as and when assigned by the Chemical Services Manager, Generation Engineering that may include asset maintenance and management and project support.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience

    Essential

  • A minimum of 7 years relevant experience
  • Specialist knowledge of design, operation and maintenance of chemical plant utilised in industry
  • Excellent team working skills.
  • Strong communication, influencing and leadership skills.
  • Full driving Licence and access to a car.
  • Desirable

  • Substantial experience in a steam power plant or similar process industry using steam and water cycles
  • Substantial experience in power plant environmental control technologies. Understanding and Knowledge of Chemical and Process Safety and its application in Industry.

    Primary degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
