    Job Title: Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, Cardio-Respiratory Care

    Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

    Professional Responsibilities:

    • Design, co-ordinate and deliver an effective and efficient inpatient Physiotherapy Cardio Respiratory Service, while being the lead ICU Physiotherapist.
    • Develop and administer the highest quality of service by identifying and implementing operational procedures in line with best practice standards.
    • Keep abreast with new developments, skills and technology to ensure continuing competence in the job.
    • Enhance his/her skills in order to initiate and respond to changes in the work environment as additional roles may be demanded e.g. data analysis, clinical audit, continued professional development and research.

    Management Responsibilities:

    • To lead and co-ordinate the Physiotherapy Cardio Respiratory team, encompassing inpatient care and the outpatient Cardio-Respiratory service in co-operation with the Allied Therapy Manager.
    • To participate in the management of the Physiotherapy Service as a member of the Senior Physiotherapy Management team in co-operation with the Allied Therapy Manager. To deputise from time to time for the Allied Therapy Manager.
    • To create and promote good working relationships through open communication.
    • To contribute to and participate in the staff induction, staff performance management and in-service training programmes.
    • To actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
    • To maintain appropriate records and statistics sufficient for organisational and legal purposes to include work related injuries/incidents.
    • To produce a service report for the Physiotherapy Annual Report.
    • To maintain and update an asset register of appropriate equipment in conjunction with the Asset Register of the hospital.
    • Toregularly review and update the Cardio-Respiratory Policy documents or to delegate these duties to competent Senior in relevant area.
    • To be responsible for overseeing equipment safety tests, both electrical and non electrical, in accordance with the Physiotherapy Department's Safety Policy.
    • To ensure that all new electrical equipment has been approved by the Facilities Department prior to use in the Physiotherapy Department.
    • To oversee the organisation of the on-call with standby rota in conjunction with other Senior Staff.

    Staff Management:

    • To lead by example a professional, dedicated and punctual team.
    • To encourage personal and professional development of team members through promotion of self-learning, formal courses and in-service training.
    • To facilitate staff compliance with Orientation training.

    Health and Safety:

    • To ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply not only with the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act, but also within the spirit of the Hospital's mission, values.
    • To be conversant with and uphold the Beacon Hospital's Safety
    • Statement, Fire Safety regulations and the Major Disaster Plan.
    • To ensure that faulty equipment is immediately removed from the treatment area and restored to safe use as promptly as possible.

    Information Technology:

    • In association with the Information Technology Department, to comply with the Computer-integrated systems for the Physiotherapy Department.
    • To collect, interpret and present data and information through audit of service activity and clinical standards.
    • In co-operation with the Allied Therapy Manager participate in the control of consumable expenditure and management of departmental budgets , including a planned programme for replacing capital equipment.

    Note 1.

    The hours of work are at the discretion of the Allied Therapy Manager and in line with service needs within a 35-hour working week, with evening cover once per week.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications:

    • Candidates must hold a degree in Physiotherapy or an equivalent qualification and be eligible for membership with the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists while being CORU Registered.

    Experience:

    • Candidates must hold at least 5 years post graduate experience in the area of Cardio Respiratory care physiotherapy. This must include significant ICU and Cardio-Thoracic experience in an acute hospital setting.
    • Significant outpatient cardiac rehab/pulmonary rehab is desirable.
    • A suitable post graduate qualification is also desirable.
    • Membership of a National Clinical Interest Group relevant to the area is desirable.

    Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge

    • To lead the ICU Physiotherapy service and provide cover to acute inpatient services as required
    • Lead the wider Cardio-Respiratory / Cardio-Thoracic Physiotherapy Team
    • Display awareness and appreciation of the service users and the ability to empathise with and treat others with dignity and respect.
    • Demonstrate sufficient clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice to carry the out duties and responsibilities of this specialist role .
    • Ensure that standards of best practice are implemented within the department.
    • Contribute to the review, evaluation and development of the physiotherapy service.
    • Monitor clinical activity and produce reports as required.
    • Develop and implement protocols and guidelines for care of patients in the cardio-respiratory/cardio-thoracic inpatient and outpatient services.
    • Ensure that accurate records are maintained through oversight of regular chart audits.
    • Encourage and maintain effective communication, partnership and collaboration links with other disciplines and groups on the complex.
    • Lead, manage and participate internal and external audits as required.
    • Attend meetings as a Clinical Specialist and sit on committees as required.
    • Take responsibility for keeping the department in general and their work area clean, tidy and safe.
    • Carry out such duties appropriate to the office as may be assigned by the Allied Therapy Manager.
    • Promote and maintain a high level of staff morale hence promoting team spirit and job satisfaction among Physiotherapists.
    • Assist in the daily operational management of the services.
    • Demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge to best practice

    All posts in Beacon Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager or hospital management.
