    Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist

     

    Role Overview:

    A Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist plays a crucial part in the multi-disciplinary team, responsible for preparing and treating patients with cancer or other conditions requiring radiotherapy. The role involves providing psychosocial support to patients throughout their treatment journey.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for justifying pre-treatment imaging and ensuring accurate treatment delivery while adhering to radiation safety regulations. They must also engage in continuous professional development, assessing the quality of their work on an ongoing basis and staying up-to-date with state registration guidelines from CORU.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    1. Maintains a caring atmosphere for patients, visitors, medical staff, and colleagues.
    2. Delivers radiation treatment according to written prescription and treatment plan. Ensures patient safety through adherence to Departmental Procedures for treatment administration.
    3. Ensures the quality of treatment delivery by documenting treatment records accurately and thoroughly.
    4. Ensures the quality and consistency of treatment by interpreting electronic images and implementing changes as necessary. Explains treatment procedures to patients and families. Refers medical questions to appropriate personnel.
    5. At the request of a Radiation Oncologist, performs CT simulation/clinical mark-ups after identifying optimal immobilization procedures. Administers oral and IV contrast agents when requested. Performs measurements for use during treatment calculation. Collects and documents data acquired during simulation procedures and inputs this data into ARIA accurately.
    6. Assists in orienting and supervising students during clinical rotations. Evaluates student performance with appointed Student Liaison Radiation Therapists.
    7. Assists in all treatment-related procedures as needed. Provides assistance at other UPMC Ireland locations when required.
    8. Utilizes effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills to explain treatment-related procedures. Responds effectively to patient concerns. Observes patients for expected and unexpected reactions to treatments and communicates this to relevant staff members.
    9. Performs and documents daily and weekly QA activity for assigned equipment. Notifies the Physics team immediately of findings outside normal operations. Participates in quality improvement programs within the Department. Attends departmental QA meetings.
    10. Attends multidisciplinary team meetings for coordination of patient care.
    11. Completes the daily treatment schedule. Maintains accurate records of procedures, including billing information and codes.
    12. Maintains a safe, orderly treatment room environment.
    13. Provides on-call coverage for emergency situations involving patient treatment.
    14. Oversees the day-to-day running of treatment units and CT unit. Ensures smooth operation of the daily list and adequate skill/grade mix cover of Radiation Therapists working on the unit.
    15. Works alongside junior staff members, makes decisions, and takes responsibility for those decisions relating to individual patient treatment.
    16. Trains and supervises more junior Radiotherapy staff. Ensures competencies are complete in different areas.
    17. Involved in individual performance review process and contributes to implementation of staff development.
    18. Assists Clinical Specialist team in developing and implementing new technology and procedures. Provides leadership role to staff in managing change.
    19. Maintains familiarity with administrative tasks associated with Department operations, such as billing and scheduling procedures and generation of statistical reports. Provides cover for these tasks as necessary.
    20. Responsible for own continuous professional development in line with CORU state registration guidelines.

    Qualifications & Experience:

    To be considered for this role, applicants must have:

    1. Completion of a qualification in Radiation Therapy recognized by the Radiographers Registration Board at CORU.
    2. Maintenance of annual registration with CORU.
    3. Minimum of 6 years full-time (or aggregate of 6 years) post-qualification clinical experience.
