    St Patrick's Pontifical University at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, invites applications for the permanent post of Professor of Systematic Theology

    St Patrick's Pontifical University is nationally and internationally recognised centre of theological and philosophical learning, scholarship, and research. Founded as the Catholic National Seminary in 1795, it was recognised as a Pontifical University with Faculties of Theology, Canon Law and Philosophy in 1896. The Faculty of Theology of St Patrick's Pontifical University offers a variety of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. St Patrick's Pontifical University is located on one of the most historical campuses in Ireland, alongside one of Ireland's youngest third level institutions, Maynooth University.

    Since the Second Vatican Council, holders of the Professorship/Chair of Systematic Theology have made significant contributions to the renewal of Systematic Theology within the Catholic Tradition, inspiring oldd attracting some of Ireland's finest young theologians. Since 2011, all awards accredited by the Pontifical University have been submitted to the National Qualifications Framework (NFQ), the statutory body that recognises academic awards in Ireland. The mandate of The Pontifical University is expressed in its constitutive document Veritatis Gaudium (2017), and quality assured by AVEPRO (Agency for the Evaluation and Promotion of Quality in Ecclesiastical Universities and Faculties).

    Role

    The Professor of Systematic Theology is a key Senior Academic and educational leader, operating in conjunction with senior leadership, in supporting the mission and vision of St Patrick's Pontifical University. The Professor is responsible for research and teaching in the entire spectrum of the subject area of Systematic theology and will be expected to take a lead in advancing Systematic Theology in the Pontifical University in line with our overarching strategic objectives, by way of excellent teaching and research, postgraduate supervision, quality and reputation, programme development and realignment, and student engagement.

    The Professor of Systematic Theology is a person of proven excellence whose scholarly qualifications in addition to university degrees in Catholic theology include superior, pertinent publications in the subject area and internationally recognised outstanding achievements and experience in academic research and teaching.

    Essential skills and experience are as follows:

    • Applicants are required to have a Doctorate / PhD in Systematic Theology; a successful candidate will also be required to have a Licentiate in Systematic Theology or equivalent from a Pontifical or Catholic University; namely, a qualification which permits teaching modules in both the canonical and non-canonical degree programmes.
    • Applicants should also have competence in appropriate ancient and modern languages.
    • The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of research and peer-reviewed publications in a number of areas in Systematic Theology together with concrete future research plans and with an international reputation which will contribute to and enhance the profile of the discipline and of the strategic academic objectives of the Pontifical University.
    • Any successful candidate will have a record of successful and wide-ranging undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Systematic theology; an aptitude to use new pedagogical technologies / blended learning is essential. In addition, a candidate must have experience of extensive and competent dissertation supervision experience at both masters and doctoral levels.
    • An Applicant will be expected to link doctrines, sources, and modes of appropriation of the Christian faith for a blended audience comprised of students who are believers and non-believers alike.
    • A successful candidate will be expected to embrace a more interdisciplinary engagement of theology and also to advance the horizon of theological enquiry through strategic inter-disciplinary research projects and inter-institutional alliances.
    • The successful candidate should have key managerial skills and experience; be capable of working in a team context and of providing leadership in developing the teaching, research, and mission and strategic academic objectives of the Pontifical University; demonstrate a capacity to apply for research funding and grants.
    • A successful candidate should submit evidence of attendance of, participation in, and contribution to, international symposia and meetings on contemporary theological issues.
    • Any successful applicant will also be committed to the mission of the Pontifical University which seeks a distinctive educational and scholarly excellence that is founded on the Catholic intellectual tradition.
    • Applicants may be required on occasion to serve on committees and commissions of the Irish Episcopal Conference in the mission of the Irish Catholic Church; contribute to the life of the Church especially in theological debate, and in issues which are important in the social and pastoral discourse of the whole island of Ireland.

    Key Accountabilities, Duties and Responsibilities:

    The key accountabilities, duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited, to the following:

    • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Systematic Theology.
    • Supervision of postgraduate research in Systematic Theology at Masters, Licentiate, and Doctoral levels.
    • Publication of one's own research in respected peer-reviewed journals and by publishers of repute; where appropriate, this will be carried out in collaboration with colleagues in the Pontifical University and elsewhere.
    • Research leadership by encouraging research achievement and nurturing a research culture; this will include the obtaining of research grants where possible, and the support of the Irish Theological Quarterly, a key Faculty publication.
    • A willingness to assume leadership and administrative roles (e.g., Dean) within the Faculty of Theology and the Pontifical University.
    • Maintaining current and fostering new relationships with other institutes of theology and cognate faculties, both nationally and internationally.
    • The active promotion of Theology in the University and the public domain; through organising conferences, lectures, and other events.

    This is a Permanent position. The salary level will be based on market rates combined with the applicants' level of experience. Candidates must be available to take up the role by 19th August 2024 to be conversant of the expectations for the new Academic year 2024/2025.
